Menar wetland complex is a mosaic comprising a network of three wetlands, farmlands and scrub lands spread across an area of 463.414
hectares (ha). The three wetlands that are integral to these wetlands include: Dhand Talab with an area of 64 ha (Lat 24.592122° N, Long.
74.110189° °E); Braham Talab with an area of 53.1 ha (Lat 24.602936° ° N, Long. 74.106033 ° °E) and Kheroda talab with an area if 46.3 ha
(Lat 24.590271 ° N, Long. 74.069043°E)). Rest of the area is agricultural area, which gets inundated during monsoon season. This mosaic
which support diverse life forms.
Menar is a small village on the Udaipur-Chittorgarh National Highway (NH-76), 50 km away from the city of Udaipur, which is also known as the
city of lakes and is a major tourist destination and is an excellent example of community driven wetland conservation.
These wetlands are typical monsoonal wetlands, which get most of their water from rainfall and surface runoff from the catchment. This diverse
aquatic habitat thrives with life forms and provides a significant abode especially for the migratory waterbirds. The wetland complex supports
259 species of birds, many of which are of conservation significance. These include two critically endangered species Long-billed vulture (Gyps
indicus) and While rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) and three endangered species Indian skimmer (Rynchops albicollis), Egyptian vulture
(Neophron percnopterus) and Steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis).Out of the total 259 species recorded from the wetland complex, 110 species
are waterbirds (of which 67 species are migratory)
Globally vulnerable species Sarus Crane (Grus antigone) breeds in Menar wetland complex. This site is also home to nine vulnerable and
sixteen near threatened bird species. The site is home to a large number of birds - Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), Great Crested
Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) Common Pochard (Aythya ferina), Gadwall (Mareca strepera), Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata), Bar-headed
Goose (Anser indicus), Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos), Cotton Pygmy Goose (Nettapus coromandelianus), Indian Spot-billed Duck
(Anas poecilorhyncha), Common Cranes (Grus grus). Menar wetland complex presents one of the best examples of community led wetland
conservation in the state of Rajasthan.
